Berlin (AP)-Does sexuality also retire? For a study on sex in old age, Berlin researchers compared Generation 60 Plus statements with surveys among younger adults. Their result: Sexuality in old age is different.

But the ability to experience intimacy remains almost unaffected by age, the researchers write in the journal «Psychology and Aging».

The basis was the Berlin Age Study II (BASE II), whose data were collected between 2009 and 2013. The researchers targeted 1514 people between the ages of 60 and 82. The data was compared to those of a control sample of 475 younger adults between the ages of 22 and 36.

The scientists showed that the decrease between 60 and 80 years of age applied primarily to sexual activity and sexual thoughts. «For intimacy, there was only a very small difference between young and old,» reports psychologist Karolina Kolodziejczak from Berlin's Humboldt University.

Among seniors, scientists also found no indication that the desire for sex from a very specific age would subside particularly rapidly. On the contrary, nearly a third of study participants between 60 and 80 said they were more sexually active and had more thoughts about sex than the fledgling comparison group.
