  • The famous coffee mug in ' Game of Thrones ' gives Starbucks free ads

  • Their value reportedly stands at $2.3 billion

  • In the process, it wasn't even a Starbucks mug
The coffee mug accidentally displayed on "Game of Thrones" doesn't just make fans feel good. For Starbucks, the fail from the final season of the cult series proves a hit. Attentive onlookers had spotted the to-go mug in front of Emilia Clarke on a table in the fourth episode. Quickly, the rumor made the rounds that it was a Starbucks drink. While that was wrong, the US brand was on everyone's lips worldwide. An expert now thinks: This advertisement is worth $2.3 billion (equivalent to around 2.1 billion euros) for the company!

According to the report, other counts assume that almost 200,000 mentions within 48 hours. In the process, broadcaster HBO had quickly retouched the (branded) mug from the scene. "In truth, though, this is just the tip of the iceberg," Jones said, looking at social media and word of mouth.

Marketing expert Dan Hill, on the other hand, finds it impossible to estimate the monetary value of unwanted advertising. However, there is no doubt in his mind that the accident is much more valuable than paid product placement – precisely because the association with the brand was not planned. He also expects the "GoT meets Starbucks" meme to make the rounds for quite some time to come. That way, Starbucks could even benefit from the mucher fail in the long run, he said.

Starbucks declined to comment, according to CNBC.
