Us actress Doris Day is dead. That's what her foundation The Doris Day Animal Foundation announced. She passed away Monday morning at her home in Carmel Valley, California. She turned 97.

Until recently, she said, she was "in excellent health condition for her age," the foundation let it be known in a statement until it recently contracted severe pneumonia. She died on May 13 in the early hours of the morning "in the presence of some close friends."

As a singer and actress, she became an icon

Day, who was born Mary Ann of Kappelhoff, first rose to fame as a singer before launching through in Hollywood and becoming one of the biggest movie stars of her time with films such as "Heavy Colts in Tite Hand."

She rose to world fame in the 50s and 60s, especially in screwball comedies such as "bedfowsters" alongside Rock Hudson or musicals. To this day, her performance of the Oscar-winning song "Que Sera Sera," which she sang in "The Man Who Known Too Much," is unforgotten.

Early withdrawal from the film business

Despite her enormous success in film and television-from 1968 to 1973, she had her own sitcom on US television with "The Doris Day Show"-she retired from the Hollywood business in the mid-70s and devoted herself with full dedication to animal welfare. Her last public appearance was 30 years ago, when she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 1989 Golden Globes.

Aside from scattered interviews, she has lived a life away from the public eye ever since. She is said to have turned down an honorary Oscar, as well as many other awards.

On April 3, Day had celebrated her 97th birthday with, as she told "The Hollywood Reporter," several "quiet dinners" with friends. She is also said to have had close confidants with her when she died. Children are not survived by Doris Day: Their son, music producer Terry Melcher, had died of cancer as early as 2004.
