Frankfurt (Reuters)-German chemist Bayer declares Saturday to refuse "unethical" behavior in the aftermath of the initiation of a preliminary investigation into a file constituted by its subsidiary Monsanto on the positions of personalities in France on pesticides but does not pronounce on the substance.

According to Le Monde, this secret file of 200 names of journalists, politicians, leaders of professional or scientific organizations, dates from November 2016 and comes from a leak from the lobbying and public relations firm Fleishman-Hillard, "mandated by Monsanto to assist in its defense of glyphosate."

Monsanto, acquired by Bayer announced in June 2018, sells Roundup, a controversial herbicide based on glyphosate.

"We are for transparency and fair treatment of all interest groups," says Bayer in email to Reuters saying not knowing  "what documents the claims relate to".

"We do not accept any unethical conduct in our company. This is obviously also true for the regulation of data confidentiality in the respective countries, "adds the German group.

Personalities whose names are quoted as appearing in the file have announced on Friday their intention to complain.

The preliminary investigation, entrusted to the Brigade for the Suppression of delinquency against the person (BRDP), was opened by the Prosecutor's Office in Paris, following a complaint lodged by Le Monde.
